About Great Bentley

Great Bentley is located in north east Essex in the District of Tendring, approximately seven miles east of Colchester.

The population in the 2001 census was 2,259.  Apart from the village, the Parish is made up of the hamlet of Aingers Green, Holly Bush Hill and part of Flag Hill.

The Village Green was purchased by the Parish Council on behalf of the residents of the Great Bentley in 1965 from the then Lord of the Manor.

The village came to prominence when it won the national Village of the Year competition in 2000 and is celebrating again this year after capturing the top prize in this year’s Essex Village of the Year and Best Kept Village Competition.

Great Bentley is best known for having the largest Village Green (approximately 43 acres) in England. However, this was just one of many features.

The village has a thriving Business Centre, with local businesses collectively providing around 200 jobs to the community. A large number of community groups is augmented by an unusually wide range of events such as a carnival, village show and drama productions that are designed to appeal to residents of all ages.
